Secara teori lereng adalah rasio jumlah pertambahan tinggi (sumbu) Y seiring pertambahan (sumbu) X, besaran lereng menginformasikan seberapa curam sebuah garis atau seberapa banyak (tinggi) Y meningkat seiring bertambahnya (panjang) X. Kemiringannya adalah konstan (sama) di mana saja pada garis. FAO mendefinisikan kemiringan lahan sebagi naik atau turunnya
